Having worked with some of the best hitting coaches in college and professional baseball over the years, we have found that great hitters have many different hitting styles and stances.
However, it is our conclusion that great hitters & hitting coaches everywhere generally subscribe to certain fundamentals. Keep in mind that there are no “always” or “nevers” in hitting, that there are exceptions to almost every rule, and that every great hitter is an original. What’s more, many MLB hitters are so gifted in certain areas they can do things that normal athletes cannot.
With that said, here are the 9 most common fundamentals taught by major league hitting coaches:
- See the Ball
- Grip
- Rhythm
- Balance
- Load the Knob
- Separation
- Stay square
- Let the ball come to you
- Think swing first, turn second
I would like to thank the many coaches who took the time to share their knowledge with me and my students. In particular I would like to mention that Rudy Jaramillo, the great hitting coach from the Texas Rangers, opened my eyes with his original explanation of his 8 fundamentals 30 years ago!
Rudy showed me many things, not the least of which was his relentless work ethic.
In the next 9 Blogs we hope to explain these important fundamentals and how to teach them.
